Treatment Guides

PRF Pre & Post Care

Follow these guidelines to maximize your PRF results, minimize downtime, and ensure a safe, smooth recovery.

Your Treatment Journey

Prepare. Heal. Glow.

Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) harnesses your body's own healing power to regenerate skin and restore vitality. To get the most from your treatment, proper preparation and aftercare are essential. Please read these instructions carefully and contact our team with any questions before or after your appointment.

Before Your Appointment

Pre-Treatment Instructions

Medications & Supplements

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and similar NSAIDs for at least 7 days before treatment.

  • Discontinue fish oil, vitamin E, flaxseed oil, and herbal supplements (ginkgo biloba, garlic, ginseng) for 7 days prior.

  • Do not stop any prescribed medications without consulting your physician first.

  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24–48 hours before your appointment.

Skin Preparation

  • Arrive with clean skin — free of makeup, lotions, and skincare products on the day of treatment.

  • Avoid retinoids (Retin-A, tretinoin, retinol) and exfoliating acids (AHAs, BHAs) for 5–7 days before treatment.

  • Do not use any harsh or active skincare products in the treatment area for 48 hours prior.

  • Stay well hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment — hydration supports optimal PRF yield.

Sun & Heat Exposure

  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure and tanning beds for at least 2 weeks before treatment.

  • Do not receive any laser treatments, chemical peels, or microdermabrasion within 2 weeks prior.

  • If you have an active sunburn in the treatment area, your appointment may need to be rescheduled.

Health & Lifestyle

  • Eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water before your appointment — this helps with the blood draw.

  • Inform your provider of any recent illnesses, infections, or changes in health status.

  • Notify your provider if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of blood disorders.

  • Avoid smoking for at least 24 hours before treatment, as it can impair healing and PRF quality.

After Your Appointment

Post-Treatment Instructions

Immediate Aftercare (0–24 Hours)

  • Do not wash the treated area for at least 4–6 hours after treatment to allow PRF to absorb fully.

  • Avoid touching, rubbing, or applying pressure to the treated area.

  • Do not apply makeup, skincare products, or sunscreen to the treated area for the first 24 hours.

  • Expect mild redness, swelling, bruising, or tenderness — this is normal and part of the healing process.

  • Apply a cold compress (not directly on skin) if needed to reduce swelling — avoid ice directly on the skin.

First Week Recovery

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements for 5–7 days post-treatment unless medically necessary.

  • Do not use retinoids, exfoliating acids, or active skincare ingredients for at least 5–7 days.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs for 48–72 hours after treatment.

  • Keep the treated area clean and moisturized with gentle, fragrance-free products as directed.

  • Use SPF 30+ sunscreen daily once you resume normal skincare — sun protection is critical during healing.

Sun & Heat Avoidance

  • Avoid direct sun exposure to the treated area for at least 2 weeks post-treatment.

  • Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ whenever outdoors — UV exposure can compromise results and cause hyperpigmentation.

  • Avoid tanning beds, laser treatments, and chemical peels for a minimum of 2 weeks after treatment.

Long-Term Care & Results

  • Results develop gradually over 4–8 weeks as growth factors stimulate collagen and cellular renewal.

  • Optimal results are typically achieved with a series of 3–4 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart.

  • Maintain results with a consistent skincare routine including SPF, antioxidants, and hydration.

  • Follow up with your provider as recommended — they may suggest complementary treatments to enhance outcomes.

  • Contact Nova Med Spa immediately if you experience unusual pain, excessive swelling, or signs of infection.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does redness and swelling last after PRF?

Mild redness, swelling, and tenderness are normal and typically resolve within 24–72 hours. Bruising at the injection site may last up to 5–7 days. These are signs that the healing process is underway.

When can I resume my normal skincare routine?

You can resume gentle cleansing and moisturizing after 24 hours. Wait 5–7 days before reintroducing retinoids, exfoliating acids, and active serums. Always apply SPF once you resume normal skincare.

Can I exercise after PRF treatment?

Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy sweating, saunas, and hot tubs for 48–72 hours post-treatment. Light walking is generally fine after 24 hours.

Why should I avoid blood thinners before and after PRF?

Blood-thinning medications and supplements can reduce platelet concentration in your PRF, diminishing treatment effectiveness. They also increase the risk of bruising and prolonged bleeding at injection sites.

When will I see results from PRF?

PRF works gradually — initial improvements may be visible within 2–4 weeks, with full results developing over 3–6 months as collagen remodeling and cellular regeneration progress. A series of treatments produces the most significant outcomes.

What if I have concerns after my treatment?

Contact Nova Med Spa right away if you experience unusual or severe pain, excessive swelling, signs of infection (warmth, pus, fever), or any other unexpected reactions. We are always here to support your recovery.
